Bathrooms are often considered one of the showpiece rooms in your home, yet also need to be practical and cope with daily use. Making use of light in what is often a small space, through the use of mirrors can really brighten up the room and enhance the atmosphere. Choosing the right mirror is very important. Size, shape and more recently with tech-enabled mirrors, features need to be considered.

What sort of mirror will suit my bathroom?

Bathroom mirrors come in all sorts of shapes and sizes, it is important to consider the shape of your bathroom and what space you have available when shopping for a new mirror. If you are lucky enough to have plenty of empty wall space in your bathroom, you can fit a large hung mirror which will make a huge difference to the feeling of the room.

If you don’t have a huge amount of space, you may want to consider a mirror fronted cabinet to allow for extra storage space. Remember a cabinet won’t fit flush against a wall, so placement is very important. A cabinet above a vanity unit or a sink is usually fine and will prove to be a functional and attractive solution.

The most popular choice nowadays are slimline mirrors. These thin mirrors take up very little space and look sleek and modern.

Are mirrors with wooden frames popular?

Mirrors with wooden frames are very popular due to their low price point, but can often warp and bend over time with exposure to moisture in the air. This doesn’t mean all wooden framed mirrors are going to do this, just make sure the wood is properly treated and is of good quality before buying.

Another popular style is frameless mirrors. Remember however that the frameless part just means the frame isn’t visible. Often frameless mirrors will still have a frame behind the mirror to allow for sturdy attachment to a wall, or even have a cabinet in behind. The same caution should apply when buying a mirror like this as the wood behind the mirror will react the same way to moisture as the wood on the frame surround.

What is possible with bathroom mirrors nowadays?

As tech moves forward, and with the emergence of the internet of things, we have started to see innovation trickle down into all sorts of areas. Bathroom mirrors of 2019 can do some really interesting things beyond simply showing you your reflection.

A major inconvenience in the bathroom is once you have left the shower or bath, finding that your mirror has completely steamed up and you can’t to see your reflection in it. Which is why many mirrors now have in-built de-misters, which are activated by a small switch and will safely heat up to clear your mirror in seconds.

Many mirrors now come with built-in lighting, including both mains or battery powered options. These can be a simple backlit mirror or a modern LED colour changing mirror. It’s important to consider the power source before buying an LED mirror, as there are pros and cons to each.

Take for instance the Connect series from HIB. These mirrors have bluetooth connectivity and allow you to control their inbuilt lighting system. They also look fantastic and are a great addition to any modern bathroom. We have these mirrors in stock in our Portadown showroom so come down, have a chat and try them out for yourself!

Another excellent example of a modern mirror is the Roper Rhodes Fable Mirror, which has Spotify built in. Controlled via a smartphone, tablet or the included remote control, this mirror seamlessly brings your favourite Spotify playlists into your bathroom. Again, we have this mirror in stock in our Portadown Showroom and it proves to be very popular with our customers.
